Chapter Twelve

When passing the dining hall, Killian wasn’t concentrating on slipping by unnoticed. Keir called out his name and the room turned even quieter. Killian entered cautiously. The smell of the Lir’s blood that had made him hungry earlier now made him sick. He scanned over the half-dead body on the dining table. The Lir lay motionless. Fang marks lined her arms and neck but she blinked her tears away as her gaze stayed glued to Keir’s face. The guards were pitiless, his brother even worse. There she would wait, like a roasted pig, until Keir freed her for his own hunt.

Killian wanted to turn away from the gruesome sight but with all the eyes on him, he couldn’t afford to show more weakness. Her curly black hair was spread across the tabletop, her cream dress was stained ruby and had been ripped to expose skin in the most delectable places. Her blood pooled onto the wood, dripping sluggishly on the floor, and her breaths were shallow and faint.

Killian observed the fifty-odd guests at the table. The Unseelie Fae and Daemons all fixed him with precarious, eager gazes. After establishing that they weren’t immediate threats, Killian reluctantly looked at his twin brother. Keir sat at the head of the table with the Lir’s head turned sideways to expose her neck to him. It was savagely ripped into, mutilated, gaping open to allow her blood to pour freely.

“Where are you going?” Keir asked.

Killian swallowed harshly and eyed the watchers of his brother’s oncoming power display. His gaze drifted back to his brother.

“I asked you a fucking question!” Keir shouted as he stood.

“I needed air, if you would permit me…” Killian cowered to Keir.

Keir chuckled deeply. “Ah, you see, Isric. I need no legion of Phantoms. My alpha bitch is right here, flesh and bone.” He grabbed a chalice and held it under the Lir’s wrist to catch the last drops of blood.

An Ashvoy leant forward slightly. The dark grey and white furs of his faux cloak framed his handsome face. He patted his lips with a serviette and dropped it on the table. “I’m only saying that Draven has many Phantoms at his beck and call. I’m sure of it,” Isric said.

Killian knew this Ashvoy from his visions. Deceitful and power-hungry, he was ruthless in his desires. He was also the Ashvoy who had fed his father the poisoned blood of a Pyr female.

“But you have no proof! Just because you saw one in transition in his throne room, that isn’t enough evidence for me to place the entire blame on him.” Keir sloshed the blood in the goblet around and strolled towards Killian.

“Some Daemon is letting a Phantom posse run rampant across Otherworld. If not you, it must be him,” a sophisticated Daemon male said after sipping his wine.

“Or it could be you, Cruebin,” a dark elf sneered as she flipped her moss-green hair.

He retorted to her comment with a blown kiss.

Isric ignored the conversation and continued to pressure Keir.
